Major contract for Port of Bristol apartments awarded to Birmingham firm

A major contract for a major new port development in Bristol has been awarded to a Birmingham-based mechanical and electrical construction services company.

JS Wright, who is headquartered on Portland Street in Aston, has secured the £3.5m+ contract for McArthur’s Yard in the south west town.

It will design and build the mechanical services for 142 apartments on the ‘long abandoned’ site of McArthur’s Yard on Gas Ferry Road in Bristol’s historic port area.

The £36million project led by homebuilder Hill in association with housing provider The Guinness Partnership will provide a mix of one- and three-bedroom homes for sale on the market, condominium and social rental, as well than a commercial space on the ground floor.

JS Wright’s contract will involve the design and installation of an energy center with associated piping to distribute low temperature hot water heating to radiators in each apartment via single plate thermal interface units (HIUs ).

The company will also install a boosted cold water system for domestic hot and cold water supply; energy efficient mechanical ventilation heat recovery systems; smoke extraction; dry risers; and water sprinklers in residential areas.

It will also supply and install the sanitary facilities for each apartment; an internal rainwater system; and above ground drainage.

The file will also include the supply of a building management system (BMS) integrating a prepaid billing system for monitoring the energy consumption of each apartment.

JS Wright is due to start on site this month, he said, with the completion of contract work scheduled for May 2023.

Phil Leech, Managing Director of JS Wright, said: “We are delighted that the successful relationship we have established with such a major homebuilder by fitting out its many developments across London has been extended to Bristol.

“We now look forward to using our specialized M&E expertise to help bring much-needed, high-quality affordable and energy-efficient new homes to one of the city’s few remaining brownfield areas.”

Established in Birmingham in 1890, JS Wright designs, manufactures, installs and maintains mechanical and electrical services for the hospitality, social housing, student accommodation, leisure and commercial sectors.
